Spacecraft can require the capability to manipulate objects within their physical environment. Examples include a spacecraft servicing another spacecraft, a robotic spacecraft exploring a planet, or spacecraft docking.
Starsys builds the structures, actuators, controls and sensors that comprise these systems. Two significant examples of this capability are Orbital Express (OE) and the Mars Exploration Rover (MER).
Orbital Express
Orbital Express is a DARPA mission to demonstrate on-orbit servicing of spacecraft including refueling and component replacement. Starsys designed and delivered the capture and docking system for the Orbital Express spacecraft. The Starsys capture and docking system extends from the servicing spacecraft and grasps the client spacecraft. It then retracts creating a structurally robust connection between the two craft that allows for fluid and electrical connections, and component replacement.
Mars Exploration Rover
MER is the most successful pair of planetary exploration missions on record. The two rovers that landed on Mars in early 2004 have now been exploring the surface significantly beyond their anticipated design life of 3 months.
